How to Lose Belly Fat After 35
There is no exercise that burns fat off your stomach. Belly fat comes off when you have been eating slightly less than you burn for long enough to matter, and your body decides the order it comes off in. After 35 the math is the same. What changes is how little room you have to be sloppy.
Most people over 35 do not have a metabolism problem. They have a muscle problem, a sleep problem, and a Friday problem.
What actually changed since you were 25
You move less than you think. Not workouts, everyday movement. A desk job, a commute, a kid who needs driving somewhere, and suddenly the thousands of steps that used to happen by accident do not happen at all.
You also carry less muscle than you did, unless you have been training. Muscle is the tissue that makes it easy to eat normally without gaining. Lose some every year for a decade and the same dinner lands differently.
And alcohol stopped being free. It probably never was, but at 25 you got away with it.
None of that is a reason to eat 1,200 calories and run yourself into the ground. It is a reason to train like someone who wants to keep their muscle.
Fix the food first, and keep it boring
You cannot out-train a kitchen. Start here:
- Eat protein at every meal. We generally aim for somewhere around 0.7 to 1 gram per pound of your goal body weight, which for most people means adding protein to breakfast and lunch, not dinner.
- Build the plate around protein and vegetables, then add the carbs you actually like. Rice is not the problem. Two dinners worth of rice is.
- Drink your calories rarely. Soda, the second glass of wine, the coffee that is closer to dessert. This is the single easiest place most people over 35 find a few hundred calories.
- Stop starting over on Mondays. A big meal costs you a little. Four days of deciding the week is ruined costs you everything.
Notice there is no detox, no elimination list and no eating window. Those work when they make you eat less. They fail when they make you hungry and resentful, which is most of the time.
Lift, then walk
Strength training is what protects the muscle you have while you lose fat. Without it, some of what you lose is the tissue you wanted to keep, which is how people end up lighter, softer and right back where they started a year later.
Three days a week is enough to change your body if the sessions are honest. Squat or leg press, hinge or deadlift variation, push, pull, carry something heavy. Add a little weight or a rep when you can. That is the whole secret, and it is unglamorous on purpose.
Then walk. Walking is the most underrated fat loss tool there is because it costs you almost nothing in recovery. Aim for a number you will actually hit on a bad week, not the number you hit on your best one.
Sleep and stress are not a side note
Five hours of sleep makes you hungrier, weaker in the gym and worse at deciding things at 9 PM. You do not need a perfect routine. You need to stop treating sleep as the thing you sacrifice when the day runs long.
Same with stress. Nobody stress eats because they lack discipline. They do it because it works, briefly. The fix is usually a different outlet and a kitchen that does not have the trigger food sitting at eye level, not more willpower.
How long this takes
Slower than you want. Fat loss shows up in your face and hands before your stomach for a lot of people, which is exactly the part that makes people quit at week six. Julio lost 200 pounds working with us, and it took 15 months. Results vary from person to person, but that pace is the honest version of what real change looks like.

Common questions
Do ab exercises help you lose belly fat?
They build the muscle underneath, which is worth doing. They do not burn the fat sitting on top of it. Nutrition and total training decide that part.
Is it harder to lose belly fat after 35?
Usually, but not for the reason people assume. Less muscle, less daily movement, worse sleep and more alcohol explain most of it. Fix those and the process works the way it always did.
Should I do fasted cardio in the morning?
Only if you like it. Doing cardio fasted does not change how much fat you lose over a week. Doing cardio you hate does, because you stop doing it.
Is hormone testing worth it?
If you have symptoms that concern you, talk to your doctor rather than guessing. We coach around what your doctor tells you. We do not diagnose anything.
